COLLAGEN 101
Did you know that there are at least 16 known forms of collagen? That is an overwhelming statement considering we battle to chose the correct form to use when we typically only have a few types to choose from!
Collagen is the most abundant protein type in our bodies and is the “glue” that forms and holds our tissues together. Collagen is primarily sourced from cattle, pigs, chickens and fish and is most often sold as hydrolysed collagen peptides, a form that is most easily assimilated by our bodies for immediate use. Peptides are amino acids, the building blocks of protein and collagen with a rich amino acid profile, giving us the components needed for tissue repair and rejuvenation.
There are a myriad of reasons to add a quality collagen supplement to your daily health regime. It is used to help repair and maintain joint health and reduces the risk of joint deterioration. I have had patients report that it even reduces the pain associated with joint degeneration.. goodbye creaky knees!!!
Collagen has long been associated with beauty and anti-aging. It helps improve skin elasticity and overall tone. It hydrates skin cells, reducing and preventing fine lines. Nails and hair benefit too, growing lush and strong.
A critical aspect of collagen supplementation for me is the benefit to Gut health. It helps to optimize the immune function of the gut and helps repair and maintain intestinal function.
It’s important to decide what you want to achieve with a collagen supplement. Type 1 collagen is the most abundant and makes up about 90% of all collagen types. Type 3 collagen is closely associated with Type 1 and these forms are needed for strong hair, skin, nails, teeth and bones. Type 2 collagen is less abundant but is important in maintaining joint mobility and strong healthy cartilage. Remedy Greens Collagen Mobility is an interesting blend of Undenatured Type 2 (UC-2) and Type 1 collagen, buffered Vitamin C and beet powder. It has been found that UC-2 significantly reduces joint pain in Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis and improves joint range of motion. This is definitely a must have product if your joints are keeping you from enjoying life!
My hands down favorite collagen is from the Be Bright brand. It’s a type 1/type 3 blend hydrolysed collagen that is beautifully packaged in clear glass reuseable bottles and is also available in refill bags. Good for your health and good for the environment! I am also consistently impressed with the Beauty Gen Beauty Greens 5 in 1 collagen. You can’t get better value for money, 5 incredible products squeezed into 1 and all of them focused on skin, hair and nails.
The Real Thing Pro-Protein is a marine sourced collagen powder. It has a slight fishy smell but once it is mixed into your smoothie or coffee,it is not noticeable at all. Marine collagen is rich in amino acids Proline and Glycine which are used by your body to produce collagen. It is thought that marine collagen is a more bioavailable form of collagen.
I am often asked for a vegan collagen. Collagen by its nature can never be vegan but a few enterprising companies have copied the amino acid profile from plant source and have come up with some interesting options. One that sticks out as a winner is the Phyto Pro Collagen Booster. It’s got all the necessary cofactors to help your body build its own healthy collagen.
Collagen can be found in liquid, powder, capsules or tablets. All have the same end result and are just a matter of preference BUT in order for a noticeable result you need to take a recommended minimum of 10 grams daily. Powders are simple to use and can be added to your breakfast oats or smoothie or coffee. The neutral flavored collagens are virtually tasteless and mix easily with warm liquids.
By adding a few extra supplements, you can make your collagen pack extra punch!!
Vitamin C assists with collagen production and gives skin a bright healthy glow
Vitamin A helps with collagen production too and has the added benefits of boosting immune function, vision and promotes clear beautiful skin
Zinc helps soothe irritated damaged skin and helps the healing process
Hyaluronic acid binds collagen to elastin fibers which give skin its elasticity and also hydrates skin cells.
